Learning Climate – SSR Findings

Strength AreasGrowth Areas
Primary
Students and families feel welcomed by all staff. The community was praised for its dedication and pride in the school. Families and students were aware of all efforts of staff to be inclusive and their effort in building relationships. Students report they have a staff member they could talk to. Students were compliant and would participate as the teacher asked. Teachers had learning targets for students, and students were focused on them throughout the lessons. The school was inclusive of all students and accommodated their needs. There were intense routines and expectations in place. Students and families recognize much change but appreciate the administration’s current changes and communication.
The district’s work with RTI and MTSS is impressive, as evidenced by one-on-one paras in the classroom, accommodations such as an iPad for communication, and wobble chairs and standing desks that suggest strong support in the school. The district RTI handbook is a valuable tool that is well thought out.

Secondary
Parents mentioned seeing a lot of positive changes this year compared to years past, such as weekly communication and police patrolling the campus.
There seem to be significant strides made in the student academic planning process. School counselors meet with students and parents to discuss post high school planning.
Students are happy with choices in elective courses, particularly in middle school.
Students consistently knew what the learning expectations were and in several cases would elaborate in detail what they were learning.
Parents seemed content with the current direction of the district.
High school students shared that multiple opportunities are available for dual enrollment through PCC.
Primary
Based on limited observations, students are compliant with the whole group instruction but not actively engaged through collaboration opportunities.
In the focus groups conducted today, students and families wanted to be further challenged in academics and behavior policies need to be followed through consistently.
Although aware of safety concerns (request for a new building), the building left unlocked entry points.
Secondary
While communication is much better this year it’s coming in multiple forms making it harder to keep track of, i.e. weekly newsletter, FB, and website. Communication isn’t coordinated, too many forms to have to look through.
Parents expressed concern that there is not a high value placed on education within the community. From the focus groups we conducted today it was expressed that high expectations aren’t being set for students and mediocrity is acceptable.
Parents feel the school is safe, yet with the potential of a new school they’ve realized what is lacking in terms of safety.
